"Conceived and designed a
post-disaster retail and social hub in Van following the 2011 Van earthquake, conducting on-site assessments with AFAD, identifying suitable redevelopment sites, and delivering design proposals and presentations to address urgent community and economic recovery needs."
In October 2011 an earthquake with 7.2 magnitude struck the city of Van. National and international disaster relief was quickly sent to affected region; shelters were provided, health precautions taken, public service had begun, psychologists were supporting the victims. During our interviews with the top officials in charge, they said that the region required a morale boost. They demanded shops for retailers who had lost their shops.
As developers we quickly designed a place that is lively, colorful and functional. It would be a place where people of Van would like to be at, to socialize and to have a break from the harsh realities of life.
A multi-functional covered space is at the center of the project. Where gatherings can occur or social activities can be organized. This area is surrounded with containers that house different functions such as shops, cafes, Red Crescent office, and doctor’s office.
