PROJECT SIZE

12,000 m2

Opened in 1912 as an airfield and formally established as an airport in 1953, Atatürk Airport served as the main international gateway for İstanbul until 2019. Over the decades, the airport underwent significant expansion to accommodate increasing passenger demand and improve operational capacity. Major development phases included the construction of a new international terminal and adjacent facilities in the late 1990s and early 2000s, designed to handle tens of millions of passengers annually and integrate modern airport functions into a linear, expandable framework. This expansion was implemented under a public‑private partnership model led by operators such as TAV Airports, which invested heavily in terminal enlargement, boarding gates, parking structures, and supporting infrastructure to increase both capacity and commercial performance.

Atatürk Airport functioned as one of Europe’s busiest and most commercially active airports, generating substantial revenue from passenger services, retail, and logistics. Its expansions strengthened İstanbul’s position as a global aviation hub and stimulated surrounding urban development, including transport infrastructure, hospitality, and commercial districts.

Working with Fenis, we designed and implemented the façades of newly added building sections, contributing to the modernization and visual coherence of the airport’s expanded facilities.
